Philosophy
MAKE Architecture is a client oriented, design intensive practice, founded in the City of Los Angeles in 2008 with the guiding principle of providing refined Architectural and Interior Design services for restaurant, hospitality, retail, creative office, commercial, multi-family, institutional and residential clients. From the nascent days, their designs have garnered awards and accolades internationally, highlighted and featured by leaders of arts and culture such as Dwell, GQ, the New York Times, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Regardless if the project is a restaurant, hotel, amphitheater, or home, to MAKE, a successful project is germinated from thoughtful functionality resulting in inspirational spaces and places, positively impacting our daily experiences.
Why MAKE?
We are often asked why we have selected the name MAKE. Simply put, we enjoy collaborating with great clients to conceive exceptional design and see it built. We are driven by our passion for design, and equally understand that all projects must be founded in an understanding of the parameters within which a project exists to see them to fruition. Every project is founded upon our client’s goals and desires that we work to define at project commencement, and in parallel, we consider the overlaying restrictions the project must reside within and look for opportunities within those parameters. Each of these aspects are critical to a project’s success, albeit the zoning and building codes are not necessarily sexy topics, we enjoy navigating through them on the path to creating beautiful places and spaces. We commonly engage with the Planning and Building Departments early, to elicit clarity and identify any issues or concerns they may have, and we feel this engagement establishes a point of dialogue that builds a good foundation and helps to foster a smoother process and believe providing our client with information provides them the ability to better navigate their decision-making process. Our team uses this methodology for projects of various scales, from due diligence for larger scale development projects, assessing a site for possible development scenarios, to assisting clients with master planning, upon which the basis of their project can germinate. This approach is intended to MAKE good foundations to support the inspired design we collaboratively develop, and to see them MADE and enjoyed.
Leadership
Leadership
William Beauter, AIA, LEED AP
Mr. Beauter has been practicing in the field of Architecture since 1994. His studies in architecture began with his undergraduate work at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1997, he completed his Master's degree at The Georgia Institute of Technology where he also served as a Teaching Assistant in the design curriculum. Professional experience was first gained under the employ of Henry Schwab and later at The Hauseman Group while concurrently completing his Master’s degree. These early experiences introduced Mr. Beauter to restaurant, hospitality, and office projects as well as the process a project follows from commencement to completion.
-
Following completion of his Graduate work, he accepted a position with PFVS Architects in Atlanta, GA where he quickly advanced to managing such projects as the $25 million dollar high rise Marriott Hotel in Pontiac, MI, and the $15 million dollar 6-story Marriott Hotel in Mount Laurel, NJ. In 1999, the opportunity arose to relocate to Los Angeles for the position of Project Architect managing prestigious projects for clients such as TBWA Chiat/Day, Fox Studios, and Pallotta Teamworks. During this time, several of Mr. Beauter's projects received accolades and awards for design excellence, including a prestigious National American Institute of Architects Honor Award for Pallotta Teamworks. His projects ranged multi-family development to a 100,000 square foot project for the headquarters of News Digital Media, a subsidiary of Fox Studios. Later, at SPF:a, Mr. Beauter continued successfully guiding architecturally-significant projects, including: single-family estates, luxury condominiums, and civic venues. Notable projects include the 2005 California Council AIA Award-winning Blue Jay Way residence and renovation of one of the most significant communal spaces in the City of Los Angeles, the Greek Theater.
As co-founding Principal of MAKE, he has directed a variety of notable and award-winning projects for single-family residences, multi-family residences, retail, hospitality, and communal gathering places. From inception, MAKE’s designs have garnered awards and accolades internationally, highlighted and featured by leaders of arts and culture such as Dwell, GQ, the New York Times, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. For William, a successful project is germinated from thoughtful functionality resulting in inspirational spaces and places, positively impacting our daily experiences.
His weekends and free time are often spent skiing in Mammoth and throughout the West, hiking, running, and camping, rooting for the Dodgers, and he’s always happy to find time for a game of Bocce with friends.
Mr. Beauter is a Registered Architect.
Jess Mullen-Carey
Mr. Mullen-Carey has been practicing in the field of Architecture since 1994. Upon completion of his first professional degree from Cornell University, he embarked on his working experience in Buffalo, New York. The position allowed him to participate from beginning to end on a diverse range of civic-oriented projects, most notably the Mount Morris Community Revitalization.
Feeling the need to work in a larger and more diverse urban fabric led him to Los Angeles in the spring of 1996, accepting a position with a Beverly Hills-based design-build firm. With this role came knowledge in Tenant Improvement projects covering a wide range of uses including private sector, commercial, and residential applications. Projects included the 10,000 s.f. offices for Cheskin Masten, a $2,000,000 dance studio for the Sultan of Brunei, and the $8,000,000 residence of film director Ridley Scott.
-
The desire to further diversify his project experience led him to join another design-oriented firm in 1998. As Project Coordinator, he was able to work on several projects aimed at furthering the way individuals function as a working community including TBWA Chiat/Day NY and Blue Sky VIFX. Advancing quickly to the role of Project Architect, Mr. Mullen-Carey managed projects ranging from $500,000 to $9,000,000 including the 100,000 square foot offices of Fox Studios at 1925 S. Bundy Drive and the schematic design for Foote, Cone, and Belding. During this time, he and Mr. Beauter began building the foundation for the MAKE collective.
In 2000, Mr. Mullen-Carey was offered the opportunity to oversee the construction of a new 8,000 s.f. offices and showroom for the world-renowned furniture manufacturer Vitra. The completed project garnished much national press, including a nod as best in the country by Surface Magazine. Other responsibilities at Vitra included space planning and design on several prominent Los Angeles projects including new educational facilities for the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and the offices of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the then recently completed Walt Disney Concert Hall.
As co-founding Principals of MAKE, he and Mr. Beauter have been awarded several independent commissions including the successful Bodega Wine Bar and many other residential projects, and garnered interest from Los Angeles area museum curators and publications. It is his shared goal to maintain a diverse body of design-oriented projects as the growth of the firm continues, providing clients with inspired and inventive solutions.
